And the recent dramatic developments in the Weinstein case demonstrate why the presiding judge in the Trump trial, Judge Juan Merchan, needs to reverse his ruling allowing Trump to be questioned about proven misconduct from other cases. If he doesn’t, Trump could have an easy path to having a conviction in the case tossed out. This is essentially what happened in the Weinstein case. If he does not, Trump could get a conviction overturned while the ink hasn’t yet dried on the jury’s verdict.

In a bitterly contested 4-to-3 decision, the New York Court of Appeals found that the judge who had presided over Mr. Weinstein’s case deprived him of a fair trial in 2020 by allowing prosecutors to call witnesses who said Mr. Weinstein had assaulted them — but whose accusations were not the basis for any of the charges against him. Responding on Thursday, the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. The state Senate’s judiciary committee on Wednesday will consider Hector LaSalle to lead the New York State Court of Appeals. He currently runs a regional mid-level appellate court based in Brooklyn. More than a dozen Democrats in the chamber said they will vote against Justice LaSalle’s nomination to the chief judge role because of his previous rulings on workers’ rights and other matters, highlighting the increasingly political nature of state judicial appointments. The jury is set to begin deliberations Monday in the tax fraud trial of the Trump Organization, which is accused of a sweeping, 15-year scheme to compensate top executives of former President Donald Trump’s company off the books. The 15-count indictment charges the company and longtime CFO Allen Weisselberg with scheming to defraud, tax fraud and falsifying records. Trump Organization lawyers outlined their case that the prosecution’s star witness in the criminal trial, Weisselberg, committed his crimes to benefit himself. CNN —Two years after his conviction on rape and sexual assault charges, disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein is again set to go on trial on similar charges in Los Angeles. Weinstein, 70, has pleaded not guilty to charges including four counts of rape, four counts of forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by force and sexual battery by restraint in incidents dating from 2004 to 2013. Weinstein was already found guilty in New York of first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. The former movie producer appeared in frail health during the trial and used a walker as he arrived to and left court each day. He used a wheelchair to arrive to the sentencing in March 2020 as well as in a court hearing in Los Angeles in July 2021.

After he was found guilty in New York, the once-powerful movie mogul was moved to Los Angeles, where he’s been serving his prison sentence. In Los Angeles, Weinstein faces multiple sexual assault charges that he has pleaded not guilty to last year, including four counts of rape, four counts of forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by force and sexual battery by restraint in incidents dating from 2004 to 2013. Jury selection for Weinstein’s trial began Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. As the trial in Los Angeles is set to get underway, Weinstein has maintained his innocence and denied all allegations against him.
